    French
We started French with Aria. Her favorite words so far (based on the sound of the words) are those for penguin and doll. We were talking about her cousins and she said when she sees them she wants to say "Bonjour. Je t'aime"

    New baby on the way
We're due at the very end of the year. Aria's excited to be a big sister. She's gotten a chance to see 2 new babies in our community, with another coming along pretty much any day now, so she has a pretty good idea of what we're talking about. We met with our homebirth midwives today, and I think they're great. They came recommended by [info]tigresa

    Moving
We moved into our new house!!

We signed the escrow papers at 1:30pm yesterday, rented a U-Haul at 2:30pm, and started moving stuff out of the garage and into the truck shortly after. David was working so Caleb, Aria, Stacey, and I did most of the truck packing. It may sound generous to mention the 2-year-olds, but they did tons of work! They carried nearly half the volume of stuff, and in the absence of adult guidance would have kept going all night long until they dropped from exhaustion, kind of like labradors fetching balls. Caleb likes carrying really heavy stuff, and they both would run back enthusiastically for more.

When we got to CoHo to unload at least our bed, it was already dark. We arrived to the wailing strains of a wandering accordian (Bruce was playing while meandering along the pedestrian path), and a bunch of our cohousing friends just appeared and started unloading our truck. It was magical.

We slept here last night, and finished getting stuff out of the truck and into our unit today from about 7:30am to 1:30pm, again with a bunch of help from our neighbors, especially Rob, Robert, and Loyal.

Others are moving in too, several a day. All the 34 units are reserved, and most people will be moved in by Halloween.

We still don't have a stove or refrigerator. The appliance installer guy was supposed to have finished them all by Tuesday, as in 2 days ago.

The grounds here are great. I didn't realize how much I missed the beautiful colors of autumn. Aria says: New home, big trees.

We biked to the south town food co-op for lunch. I'm soooo pleased by how close it is!

    I'm happy and at peace.

    Cohousing buildings are finishing up
We had a celebration last night to welcome the first family to *move in* to CoHo! Two other families closed yesterday, and several should close today, hopefully including us. We've been using the common house since Saturday for meetings, food, and play. Yay!!! I'm really enjoying this community so far.

The buildings are not completely done yet, though. For instance, our unit still doesn't have a stove or refrigerator, nor does the common house. (Made cooking the Sunday dinner an adventure in distributed cooking.)

    Relaxed busy
A lot has been going on in the last week, but no stress, yay! I'm writing meal plan software for our community and I'm having fun working on it, so this entry will be short. I just wanted to say we love Corvallis and love the CoHo community. We'll move in early in October.

    Phinally Done
Tuesday night I had a dream that I was part of a group of people working on interpersonal relationships and the group process and that I had finished my PhD so that I had enough time to work on things with them and spend time with my family.

The best part of the dream was when I woke up and realized that it was true!

I finished all the requirements of my PhD as of Tuesday, July 31, including the dissertation, review, and filing. Whew!

    yum
Aria saw a picture of me when I was very pregnant with her. She pointed to the picture of my bare, bulging belly, looked at me with a curious and hopeful look, and said, "May-may?" (May-may is our word for Mommy Milk).

    Supportive toddler
I printed out a draft of my dissertation yesterday, and Aria took one
of the pages with color images and started saying over and over in her
little toddler voice: "ooh! wow!" Well, Prof. Adviser, my *baby* likes
    my dissertation...

    Polite baby
At Aria's birthday party, we got to see [info]beth_leonard and Peter. Peter would say things like "Mommy up please," so I thought I'd try introducing the word "please."  Well, Aria picked that up right away! It's neat because the sounds in "please" aren't all that similar to the rest of her vocabulary (Ba(ll), mama, dada, do(g), po(tty), bubble, bye-bye. In parentheses means she doesn't say that part of the word.). She seems to use it to mean "I want that please" and will point to something and say it, especially for nursing and books.

    Living up to her name
One of my favorite things is when Aria sits at the piano (on somebody's lap) and bangs on it and sings "AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH". She'll join in when we're singing around the piano, otherwise she'll just accompany herself. Man, I love that!

    words
Aria now waves bye-bye to people and says bye-bye at the same time. She also says bubble for bubble gum bubbles and has a much more solid grasp on the meanings of mama and dada, though she still uses these two words as her favorite babble as well.

    piano
We got a piano! Used, from the Piedmont Piano Company warehouse in SF. We walked right past the $189,000 grand (drooling a little) into the back where they had quite a few used pianos for cheap. We think it's great, (All the keys work and everything!) but when the guy sold it to us, he said he hopes the lessons for Aria go well (lessons?) so that we can come back and get a nice piano. Hee hee.

    First steps!
Aria took what I would consider her first steps today. She started from stable independent standing, stepped once with each foot, ended stable, then grabbed onto me.

We're still far from having independent walking be a viable means of locomotion. For instance, she still only stands alone for a few seconds.

She has done something like stepping before, but it was more of starting from a stand and then falling forward while moving her feet like stepping, so I didn't count that. She mostly likes to walk around holding one or more of my hands. Lately, she's been more into the one-handed walking because then she has her other hand free to explore. I can feel by how much she depends on my hand how she is progressing. Many steps are totally independent, but she still would fall often if she weren't holding on.

It's fun to see her get more and more stable and more and more bold. Hee hee!

    we moved + Aria update
We're now in San Bruno, really close to David's work. He comes home every day for lunch and Aria-time. :-)

Aria got her first teeth last Wednesday -- the 2 bottom center ones. They sure are sharp! She can scoot backward and rotate, but doesn't crawl forward yet. She loves playing peek-a-boo and say-say-oh-playmate (a hand-clapping game -- she doesn't clap, but she puts her hands out and gets a huge smile). We've been giving her "smuckers" (is there a better word? It's when you make buzzy, farty sounds with your mouth against her skin) for a while, and she likes that, and now she gives them back on my tummy. :-) She loves her Johnny-jumpup (bouncy thing you hang in the doorway). She rides in the laundry basket when we go to the laundry room, and also rides with me on my front or back in our Ergo carrier when we go places.

    ouch!
Well, we decided to vaccinate, at least partially and on a somewhat separated and delayed (for some) schedule. (I'm pretty sure she won't get any live viruses, though, so for those who care, babies she plays with shouldn't catch anything.)

Today she got DaPT and PCV. Boy did she scream. I have *never* heard her cry anywhere near that desperately, and there were actually tears in her eyes -- a first I think. I didn't think I would cry too, but I did. Wah.

They used air shots. Does anybody know anything about them? I wonder if they hurt more than needle shots. My mom said she got one once and it really hurt. Aria didn't even cry for her birth vitamin K shot. I wonder if it's because needles hurt less or if she was just so overwhelmed by birth that a shot was nothing.
